On September 14, 1995 Valley Single Squares held their first dance in the
Postal Union Hall at 2nd Avenue and Morris in Mesa, Arizona. It was immediately
apparent that this location would not be large enough to meet our needs. The
search for a suitable hall continued. Several weeks later, a hall became
available at the Holiday Village Mobile Park at Broadway and Dobson. Dances were
held each Thursday night with pre-rounds starting at 7:00 p.m. and squares from
7:30-9:30 p.m. Round dancing was, and still is, held between tips.
The Club has moved several times in the past nine years, but we have survived
and will celebrate our sixteenth anniversary in September 2011, and thirteen
years dancing at the First Presbyterian Church, 161 N. Mesa Drive, Mesa,
Arizona.
Our club was formed because there was a need to provide a venue for single
square and round dancers to come together and enjoy their favorite pastime.
Today, our club numbers over a 100 members, comprised of singles and couples. We
could say that we’ve met our goal, but we continue to expand our membership
through beginning square dance lessons, beginning and intermediate round dance
classes, word-of-mouth, and the fact that we are having “just plain fun.”
Square dancing has been called “Friendship set to music,” and we at Valley
Single Squares certainly feel that applies. Thank you for visiting our website
and please don’t hesitate to stop by and visit us. You just might like what you
see.
